Waiver-Wire Pickups – Week 5

1. Alshon Jeffery, WR, Bears – After 3 straight mediocre weeks from a fantasy perspective, Jeffery broke out to the tune of 20 points on Sunday. To the lucky few that started him: congratulations. To the rest of us: pick him up now. With teams starting to figure out that the best way to stop the Bears’ offense is to double Brandon Marshall, Jeffery will start to see more and more targets come his way. New head coach Marc Trestman loves to air it out so Alshon will see plenty of opportunities. He is an extremely talented player, and if Jay Cutler can keep giving him the ball, good things will come.

2. Brian Hoyer, QB, Browns – 1 week is a fluke, but 2 is a trend. Most people wrote off Hoyer’s solid game against the Vikings in week 3, and understandably so. However, after beating a team with Super Bowl aspirations like the Bengals, it’s time to take Hoyer a little more seriously. If you have a quarterback in a bye week right now (I’m looking at you RGIII owners) then I highly suggest picking up Hoyer for a spot start. His teammates, especially Jordan Cameron and Josh Gordon, look so much more comfortable with him leading the offense, and that comfort should continue week 5.

3. Justin Blackmon, WR, Jaguars – It’s finally week 5, which means Christmas for Jaguars fans. Wait, are there any Jaguars fans still left? Anyways, Blackmon returns from a 4 game suspension this week and should help out immediately. A receiving corps consisting of Cecil Shorts and Justin Blackmon is actually a very viable one… it’s just too bad they have no one to throw them the ball. Either way, if you’re looking for a sneaky pickup with a ton of upside, look no further than Blackmon.
